FEMA inspectors include people with criminal records

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- A newspaper reports that government inspectors who visited disaster victims' homes to verify damage claims include at least 30 people with records for crimes such as embezzlement, drug dealing and robbery.

It is not known how many in the whole work force might have criminal records because the Federal Emergency Management Agency will not release the names of any of its inspectors or their supervisors. The agency cites an "unwarranted invasion of their personal privacy."

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel found 30 inspectors or managers with criminal records out of 133 it was able to identify. Most of the inspectors are contractors.

FEMA says the government requires the hiring companies to "conduct a complete background check" of inspectors that includes local, state and national criminal searches.
