Nevada public records bill moves ahead
A key Senate panel has voted for a bill to keep confidential information on
Nevada police officers and judges that is in county assessor records.
The bill, amended and passed by the Government Affairs Committee, would make the
names on the records secret if the officer or judge gave a justification, such
as concern about possible retaliation from criminals, and obtained a court
order.
The bill in its original form was opposed by the Nevada Press Association. It
was revised to ensure that reporters could still get the information.
Also scrapped was initial wording that would have allowed more than two dozen
categories of public employees to request that the assessor's records containing
their personal information be kept confidential.
Advocates of the measure had expressed concern about access to records at county
assessors' offices that show a property owner's name, the property's value,
parcel number and, often, an aerial photo of a home.
